We work on improving the sustainability of food production under a changing climate. We design, test and deploy practices that minimize the use of agro-chemicals in farmer's fields, and promote biodiversity conservation. In recent years, a large part of our research shifted towards assessing climate change impacts on crops, pests and natural enemies at a global scale. We are based in Cyprus, an island in the eastern part of the Mediterranean sea, with one of the hotter and driest climates in the EU. Cyprus is an open laboratory for the assessment and development of climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies. Current projects include:

1. Pests in a changing climate: We assess the potential effects of climate change on crops, pests and their natural enemies. We have recently successfully concluded the project Genomite, a multinational FACCE JPI project that aims at developing tools and strategies for the management of spider mite pests (Acari: Tetranychidae) under climate change. More information about our work in Genomite here and more about the project here.

2. Sustainable vineyards under global change: Together with other colleagues throughout the EU we work on the development of low emission  practices and biodiversity conservation in vineyards. More information here.

3. Essential oil ecotoxicology and potential for development as biopesticides: We collaborate with researches at CUT, institutions abroad, as well as innovative companies in Cyprus to investigate the potential uses of plant essential oils against plant pests.

4. Conservation of wild bees: The global population decline of the honeybee, Apis melifera, in the last decade has emphasized the importance of wild bee species in securing food production. Together with colleagues from other European countries we work on identifying and conserving the wild bees of Cypurs. More information here.
